Most founders ask this six months late, usually around 11 p.m., halfway through reconciling a month of transactions they never meant to touch personally.
The test: does the role have a shape?
Three questions, before you compare any countries
- Is it recurring? Invoicing, tenant communication, inbox triage, AP entry and support tickets qualify. "Whatever comes up" does not.
- Can it be described? Not perfectly, but enough that someone competent could follow it and ask good questions.
- Does it happen in systems? Work living in QuickBooks, Yardi, AppFolio or a shared inbox transfers cleanly. Work depending on hallway context does not.
Three yeses and geography becomes an economic question. Fewer than three and the problem isn't hiring. It's definition.
When it works
- A founder or senior hire is doing work far below their pay grade. A COO spending nine hours a week on AP is the clearest case there is.
- You need 30 hours of bookkeeping, not 40 hours of controller. Local hiring forces you to round up.
- You've tried to hire locally and can't. This is common in property management, dental and medical admin, and specialized accounting.
- You're scaling a function you already understand. The third support seat is far lower risk than the first.
When it doesn't
- It's your first operational hire and you've never done the work. You can't manage what you don't understand.
- The role needs physical presence, or U.S. licensure. Support around a CPA or attorney transfers well. The licensed act itself doesn't.
- The work is genuinely undefined, such as early product, founding sales or brand strategy.
- You're doing it purely to cut a number. Cost-only offshoring produces cost-only outcomes.
Two comparisons worth making separately
Once you've decided the role qualifies, two further questions follow, and each deserves its own answer rather than a paragraph here.
- Offshore vs. local hiring. What you gain and give up on each side, across speed, talent pool, control and culture, not just cost.
- Freelancer, marketplace or managed partner. Which arrangement fits the work, and what choosing wrong costs you.
On cost specifically, clients may save up to 80% against the total cost of a comparable U.S. employee, though that's a ceiling rather than a promise. Actual savings depend on the position, the experience required and your compensation structure. We break the math down here.
How Bota does it
We don't send résumés. Screening happens before you're involved: multiple interviews, verified English proficiency, reference checks, background screening completed before start, and role-specific assessments. You still interview and select the person yourself.
Your professional is dedicated to your business, not rotated across accounts, and available during U.S. business hours. We handle HR administration, payroll, compliance, equipment and ongoing performance oversight from White Plains, New York.
Qualified candidates can often be presented for interviews within 48 hours. From first interview to start date is typically 7 to 14 days.
The real question
Hiring an offshore team isn't about replacing local employees. It's about keeping judgment, relationships and strategy close while building capacity around defined, recurring work, so your senior people can stay senior.
Roles we place
Common questions
Is my startup too small to hire an offshore team?
Size matters less than clarity. If you have at least 20 hours a week of recurring, definable work in one function, the role is usually viable. Companies with fewer than five employees do this successfully, but the work has to be defined first.
Can offshore staff work U.S. business hours?
Yes. Bota professionals are available during U.S. business hours and dedicated to a single client. Ask any provider whether they offer full coverage of your business day or only partial overlap, because the difference is significant.
What roles can you outsource offshore?
Property management and real estate operations, bookkeeping and accounting, accounts payable and receivable, dental and medical administration, legal support, customer service, executive assistance, marketing, architecture and engineering coordination, and technology and QA.
How much does offshore staffing save?
Clients may save up to 80% compared with the total cost of a comparable U.S.-based employee. Actual savings vary by position, experience level and compensation structure, so compare fully loaded costs rather than salary alone.
How long does it take to hire someone offshore?
Qualified candidates can often be presented for interviews within 48 hours. From first interview to start date typically takes 7 to 14 days, depending on the role and how quickly your team decides.
